Walkthrough

The journal at the bottom of the stairs tells you that you need to find 7 cloths to open the gate.
Climb the ladder to get outside.
  (There's a sprite of a boat sailing around.)
  There is a cloth at the base of this tower, at the back.
Go to the large island.
  There is a gate with a non-functioning button in a valley near the lake.
  On one side of the island is a balcony, with a cloth.
  On a hill on the back side, is a depression with something like the starting chamber of Riven, with a cloth on it's back.  (And a ball that says "Myst Friends".)
  To get to the island with the turtle shell, start on the right side of the metal pole in the water, and swim such that the current doesn't take you too far to the left, and instead onto the pole.
    On top of the pile of yellow posts is a cloth.
    Behind one of the black Easter-Island-like-statues, is a cloth.
    Behind the island is an enclave you can swim into, with something looking like a Nexus station and a cloth!
  In a pond on the big island (the right hand side) there is a cave you can swim into with a cloth.
After having got all 7 cloths, head back to the gate with the button and it now works.
Explore all the way down to the room with the giant piston!
