Ice Cream, yuuuuummmmmm
I remember as a kid my father going on about how when he was a kid (back when WWII was raging on), his family used to take trips over to his great uncles place. He always had stories about great foods like smoked meats, watermellon chilled by a babbling brook, moon shine and cider for the adults, and home made ice cream for the kids.
"Nothing like home made ice cream Andy." he'd always say. Not sure if it was the ingredients he was going on about, or the fact they would take turns cranking the ice cream maker while sitting around listening to the radio on war reports, or the different radio shows.
I do know that 2 decades ago I decided to get an ice cream maker. Being a wimp, I got one with an electric motor. I found a simple recipie to try and gave it a whirl.
Wow! That was some of the best tasting ice cream I'd ever had!
That was back in 1995 or 96. The ice cream maker disappeared over the years.
Yesterday I went out and got a brand new one. This one makes 6 quarts. I picked up extra milk and heavy cream too. This morning I threw my shoes on and jumped in the car, ran to the nearest gas station (about 8 miles away......well hey, I live WAY deep in the country), and picked up two 10 pound bags of ice.
This time I followed a old home made vanilla recipie, uses 6 cups of heavy cream, 6 eggs, 7 cups of milk, 1/4 cup of flour, 2 cups of sugar, and 3 table spoons of vanilla.
I got the custard cooked, and stowed it in the fridge for a couple of hours to chill. When it was time, I put the mixture in the ice cream maker, put in the ice and rock salt and let it go to town for about 1 hour.
When it was done, the ice cream was like the soft ice cream you get dispensed out of the machine. As I was putting into a container to then go into the freezer, my son Josh was begging for some. So I scooped some into a small bowl, and his eyes went wide and round, saying it was the best tasting ice cream he'd ever had! Heh.
Being diabetic, I can't enjoy stuff like this, but I can take a taste or 2 without falling into a diabetic coma. I took a spoonfull in my mouth, and oh my god, it was an explosion of sweetness in my mouth like I've not had in years! I for got how wonderful sugar tastes! Oh yah, the ice cream itself was wonderful too! hehehehehe.
So I have another receipe I'm going to try. I'm calling it Thrice Cream after the cartoon Chowder, as the main flavors call for 3 bananas, 3 oranges and 3 lemons.
Can't wait to give this one a try either.
I hate the 100 plus summer temps we get around here, but we sure do know how to cool off with our chilled sweet teas, cold beers, and home made ice cream!
Y'all take care now, ya hear?
